Join Dr. T.D. Worthington for the August 29th Edition of the Pathlight Program.
We all like to be treated fair, so if fair is a good thing, then God must be fair. But actually, He’s not. You see, being just is better than being fair, but as humans, being fair is about the best we can hope for. I can’t be totally just because I don’t have all the information necessary to be just.
Two men each steal a loaf of bread from my store. One is stealing because his children are hungry, the other is stealing because he is financing a drug habit. Stealing is always wrong, both deserve a penalty, but should the penalty be the same? Being fair can get a little sticky.
Jesus taught that God does not operate according to our notion of what is fair. He is just…because He knows all the intricate details behind our sin…details that we just wouldn’t know.
In this week’s PathLight, Dr. T. D. Worthington reminds us why forgiven people should find it easy to forgive people. Because of the cross, we find the strength to believe that we have no room to demand fairness.
We can remember that an unfair exchange saved our souls. And in response, we can extend unmerited grace to those around us. We may even learn to praise God that He is not fair.
